The Castle Loket is ranaround by the river Ohre
The region was inhabited from primaeval times. When the Přemyslid state was emerging in the 10th century, the administrative centre of the region was the castle of Sedlec near the present Karlovy Vary. Documents first mention Loket in 1234.
Loket, a picturesque Gothic royal castle, was founded on the site of an older Romanesque building in the 13th century. It was extended during the period of Wenceslas IV, rebuilt in the 16th century and partially destroyed in the 19th century.
Loket Castle (Czech: Hrad Loket) is a 12th-century castle located in Loket, Czech Republic, which is surrounded on three sides by the Ohře river. The castle, built in Gothic style, is preserved as a national monument.
Every year the town plays host to an Opera festival, with performances by the Czech National Opera, in an outdoor amphitheatre with the Castle as a backdrop and is also host for the Czech motocross Grand Prix
The main domination of the town is castle Loket. The castle was established during the 3th quarter of the 12th century during the government of King Vladislav II. The reason for the build-up of the fort was the diffusion of German’s clerks, who occupied part of Sedlecko from both sides of the border. Loket`s town council asked to rebuild the part of the old town into a town prison. Builder Leistner started to rebuild it in the year 1797, it was finished in the year 1822 and it was a prison until the year 1949.
